Make your Engagement Session Awesome!

August 9, 2017

Filed in: Engagements

I know it’s crazy, but your engagement session doesn’t have to be just another thing to check off your wedding to-do list. It can be fun. It can be romantic. It can be awesome!

  • Why: Lots of reasons, actually!
    • We get know each other. I learn what kind of poses you like and feel natural in, what makes you laugh, what makes you love each other. This helps me capture the best photos possible on your wedding day. It also lets you know how I work. How I direct you into certain poses, how I get different angles, etc.
    • Wedding purposes. The photos created can serve many purposes for your wedding. Put them up on a wedding website, use them for your save-the-date or invitation, or make a guest book for your wedding.
    • They’re just plain fun! We often get so wrapped up in our day to day lives that we don’t take time to celebrate our love. Your engagement session lets you revel in your love for each other, often in a beautiful and fun setting.
  • When: Anytime before your wedding. If you have a plan for your photos, here’s what I suggest:
    • Engagement Announcement: in the first month you’re engaged.
    • Save-the-dates: 9+ months before your wedding is standard.
    • Invitations: 3+ months before your wedding.
    • Guest Book: 2+ months before your wedding.
    • Just for fun: Anytime you like the weather!
  • Where: Somewhere meaningful. Somewhere beautiful. Somewhere fun!
    • Scenic: Let’s go to the ocean. Maybe Cypress Gardens, a park, or the never-beatable Downtown!
    • At home: Your home is your comfort zone, and when you’re comfortable, you look better on camera. Choose an area like your living room or front stoop. A great place to go if you want to include your fur babies.
    • Day trip: Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head, anyone? Or to the creek. Or maybe you’re more of the Woodsy type, taking us to the mountains!
    • Your spot: How about the place you met? The wine bar where you got engaged? Your favorite coffee shop? A great way to relive memorable moments which are sure to create wonderful candid photos.
  • What to wear: Gone are the days of both people wearing jeans and a white shirt. It’s all about coordinating and being comfortable! An hour session is usually enough time for 2 outfits. Most couples choose to do one dressy and one casual. Try to avoid big graphics or logos. Patterns can be fun, but try to leave the pattern to one person, while the other wears a solid, coordinating color. If our location involved some walking and you plan on wearing heels, be sure to bring along comfy walking shoes.
  • What to Bring: Props can be a fun addition to your session. Make them simple, though. A guitar, your favorite book, pets, etc. Things that represent you as a couple. Something like a  “save the date” sign is fun too! A bouquet or hat can be a wonderful addition as well, giving your hands something to do!
